Default Bows

I am new to the game and I love it, I especially love pre and fighting the charr. Im a ranger/monk and love being both, but when it comes to finding a good bow Im at loss. Oneplayer tried to sell me a bow for 4000 last night and i do not know if it would have been worth it. Can someone tell me what a good bow for fighting charr in pre is?

Also I was talking to other players in game and they told me they have modded bows. What does this mean?

Last I seen players with bows with feathers on them all the way down the bow. I noticed they are very good at fighting charr, does anyone know what this bow is called?

Okay woah woah - Firstly in Presearing don't expect to find good bows. Secondly once your out of presearing you want the bow with the highest damage your requirement (how many attribute points you have in marksmanship) can support - the Maximum Damage for a Bow is 15-28.
For finding a good or perfect bow your looking for a bow with all max stats - Thus I would suggest a green colored type - "unique bow" - The majority of these have all maximum stats but have different modifiers on them - a full ist can be found here: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/List_...r_unique_items

No bow you can get in presearing is worth 4000. Period.

Second of all, there are no "hidden stats." A bow that looks one way will not be better then a bow that looks another way. Just because a bow has a different "skin" (ie, looks different) doesn't mean that it will do more damage.

There are different types of bows. Longbows, shortbows, recursve bows, etc. You can find that written in gray underneath the rest of the bow's stats. They have different refire speeds, arrow arc path, and ranges. Each is situational.

My suggestion is not to worry about equipment too much. Don't bother buying anything. Just use the best bow you find. Save your money until you know enough about the game to know what to buy.

Modded weapons are weapons with "mods" (modifications) on them. These mods provide some sort of benefit and are listed as prefixes and suffuxes to a weapons name. For example, a "fiery longbow of shelter" has a fiery mod (which converts the bows physical damage to fire damage, making it do more damage to foes with high pyhscial armor like warriors but less to foes with high elemental armor like rangers) and a shelter mod (which adds more armor against physical attacks).

Mods can be salvaged off of weapons using expert salvage kits (available after presearing) and then reattached to other weapons (so if you find a lower damage bow with a mod you like, you can salvage it off that bow and put it on a better one). Each weapon can only have 2 mods at a time.

There are also inscriptions, which are similar to mods, which deal straight up bonus damage. Weapons in the first GW and Faction can't have their inscriptions salvaged or changed while Nightfall and Eye of the North weapons can.

If you are really, and I mean really, intent on staying in presearing for a long time, you might want to buy the GotY upgrade from the online store. It's only a couple dollars (five, maybe? I don't remember) and it gives you access to a slew of max weapons that you can create and discard repeatedly, at your leisure.

In pre-sear do the quest "The Hunters Horn". the bow given is about as good as you will get.

The bow with feathers all the way down is probably the nevermore bow which is a bow you get for purchasing the game of the year upgrade. It is a max damage bow. Go to the in-game store, it's 5 bucks.
